Long before the compass was invented the Vikings sailed to Iceland, Greenland and Russia with their ships. Seafarers used so-called ’sunstones’, transparent calcite stones, as navigation instruments. The ’Viking Compass’ amulet consists of the Icelandic symbol ’Vegvísir’ which is located in the centre with the runic alphabet around it. The magical staves of the Vegvísir and the runes are intended to help the bearer have a safe journey and find his way, even under rough conditions.
